AIR PLANT CARE

LIFE CYCLE ☼ COLOR

Tillandsias, commonly known as air plants, are unique, low-maintenance plants which do not require soil to grow. Air plants absorb water and nutrients not through their roots like most plants but through their leaves, with the help of tiny hairs called trichomes, which are what give them their silvery sheen and velvety feel.

Some air plants will change color upon maturity as they prepare to bloom and produce flowers.  THIS HAPPENS ONLY ONCE.

Air plants that turn red will produce purple/pink flowers. Those that turn yellow will produce white flowers. It may take several years before they bloom. After an air plant blooms, it will remain alive but will not bloom again. It will produce offsprings called “pups” which can be gently removed to become new air plants.

STORAGE ☼ LIGHTING

DO NOT mix air plant with copper, which will kill it over time.

DO NOT cover terrarium or place in an enclosed container.

DO NOT place in direct sunlight.

PLACE in indirect sunlight or shaded area.

KEEP in well-ventilated room with temperatures between 50-90ºF.  Air circulation is important for air plant to receive nutrients and to dry up after watering.

WATER

There are a few ways to water your air plant. In all cases, ALWAYS remove air plant from container before watering. After watering, gently shake off excess water and turn air plant upside down to dry.  Allow air plant to dry completely before placing back into container.

1. Submerge entire air plant in water for 1-5 minutes 1X per week.

2. If you forgot to water for 2 weeks or more, submerge air plant for 10-30 minutes.

3. (Optional) Spray or mist air plant 2-3X per week. This can be done in addition to the methods above for the healthiest air plant.

If tips turn brown, your air plant is telling you it needs more frequent watering!

***Care for air plants will change with the seasons and is dependent on climate. For states with 4 seasons, reduce watering in winters by submerging entire air plant in water for 1-5 minutes every 2-4 weeks.
